La nova Pasporta Servo iritas gastigantojn: Dum jardekoj Pasporta Servo estis unu el la ĉefaj atutoj de la junulara Esperanto-movado. Dum la gastigadon uzis grandparte junaj esperantistoj, multaj el la gastigantoj estis klare pli aĝaj. Antaŭ tri jaroj la estraro de TEJO anoncis la lanĉon de nova interreta versio de la servo, kiu de tiam serĉas sian formon. Unue tute ne aperis la papera listo de gastigantoj, kaj ĉi-jare multaj gastigantoj malkontentas, ĉar TEJO decidis ne sendi al ili la liston. Ĝi ja alireblas rete, argumentas TEJO - sed eĉ tie la gastigantoj ne povas modifi la informojn pri si mem aŭ malaliĝi.

Esperanto in the Counting House

We decide. recently that members of the Glasgow Esperanto Society should on occasion meet informally in a Glasgow hostelry.

Six of us met in the Counting House, George Square, a few nights ago.

It was a pleasant encounter with much Esperanto conversation about congresses, technology, Kindle, web pages, and plenty more.

The Counting House was rather full; so our non-English conversation was probably not noticed. However, it was an event which should be repeated.

Hopefully there will be unexpected Esperanto visitors in the days to come!

Disappearance of David Kelso

David Kelso set off on his customary winter afternoon walk in Calabria and never returned. Extensive searches were in vain; he had disappeared without trace. There have been no further developments. We are left with a void and a mystery.
David led his life between Scotland and Italy. He always seemed to appear on important occasions. The sense that he will reappear remains, irrational though it may seem. No-one wishes to write obituaries. We still are waiting for news – any news.
David was big in every sense; his conviviality was legendary. He had Scottish dimensions and British. In Scotland he was an SEA Past-President and a committee member; in England he was a former Director of EAB and Secretary of the Management Committee. If he had an idea, he argued it with force - even with impatience. He spoke plainly in a way which was very Scottish. He always wished things to be clearly expressed in writing; he disliked fuzzy thinking.
But in his essential being he was a sociable man who enjoyed food and drink and debate.
Colleagues have been traumatized by his disappearance in the Calabrian hills in such unusual circumstances; yet strangely we still have the notion that a door will open and he will impinge upon us again after another Italian sojourn.

Cancellation of Zamenhof Day

The weather in Scotland has been incredibly severe: enormous falls of snow and arctic temperatures resulting in severe travel disruption.

It has therefore been decided to cancel the Zamenhof Day in Motherwell on Saturday 11th December.

Hopefully a festive day will be possible at a later date in the same venues.

David Kelso still missing

It is now 3 weeks since David went for an afternoon stroll from his second home in Calabria.

He has not been seen since.

There has been an extensive search operation - unfortunately in vain.

The Italian police have now ended the search, but the case remains open.

These circumstances have stunned his friends and colleagues.

The Scottish Esperanto Association is acutely aware of the terrible suffering which his disappearance has caused to his family.

The Zamanhof-festo this year will be held on Saturday 12th December. It will be a joint event of SEA and the Glasgow Esoeranto Society and will take place in Motherwell.

It will begin with a festive lunch (£12.50) at 12.30 in the Bentley Hotel, followed by entertainment and erudition from 14.00 until 16.00 in the hall of Holy Trinity Church.

The festo is a return to the pattern which was so succesful in Aberdour in previous years.

A one day course covering the 1st six lessons of Stano Marček's "Esperanto by Direct Method" will take place on 17th October 2009 at 38 Elmbank Crescent, Glasgow G2 4PS (Quaker Meeting House).

Scottish Esperanto Congress 2009

A few belated comments. I could only participate on the Saturday for family reasons; I really regret this.

Dundee is Scotland's unknown city; every visit is a pleasure. The Queen's Hotel was also a pleasure: high Victorian architecture at its best!

Stano Marĉek was another pleasure; he was a worthy principal guest; his direct-method textbook has been phenomenon with over 20 translation; he explained his methodology well.

The excursion to Cairn O' Mohr was another pleasure: such excellent wine, such a detailed clarification of its production; such excellent Esperanto conversation - helped a little by the wine!

Scottish Esperanto Congress Dundee 2009

Dundee awaits us

The Scottish Esperanto Congress will take place on 5-7 June, in the
Queen's Hotel, Dundee. Our international guest will be Stano Marček from Slovakia, editor of the World Esperanto Association's magazine
"Esperanto". The theme of the Congress will be "The Esperanto movement:
present and future". As well as the usual lineup of interesting talks and festivities, the Congress will also
be taking a trip to the nearby
"Cairn o' Mohr" winery, where the soft fruits of the Tay valley are turned into delicious alcoholic refreshment!

The Congress will also host the Association AGM, where there will be a debate and vote on whether the Association should become an officially registered charity.

FThe Scottish Esperanto Association will be celebrating the birthday od Dr. Zamenhof at the Unitarian Centre, 72 Berkeley Street, Glasgow, on Saturday 6th December 2008 at 2.30pm.

The main programme item will be an interview of John Francis by David Kelso. John is a most distinguised Esperanto writer and translater. He is the only surviving member of the Scottish School.

There will be light refreshments.

Scottish Esperanto Study Weekend 2008: Report

Saturday 6th September

The programme began with a “Language Seminar” in which Professor John Wells spoke about the suffix “um” and how it can be used. There followed a lively discussion amongst the participants. The session was interesting and informative.

By contrast to other Study Weekends we didn't wait until the afternoon before going on our excursion. At 11am the “students” set off to nearby Bridge of Allan, which is only one stop away by train. First we went to the Parish Church of Bridge of Allan to see the furniture and decorative organ panel designed by the famous Glasgow Architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The church curators kindly served us with tea and biscuits before the tour. Next we went to the local brewery for another tour. Unfortunately the brewery, which is being restored, had still not re-opened. Instead the owner entertained us with an interesting description of his beers and with samples of the said! The lunch of soup and sandwiches was welcome when it came.

After visiting the town a group of participants met under Jack Casey's guidance. Jack asked the group to write something about their “Favourite Thing”: experience, book, film, personality and so on. After enough time to think about the theme and to write something, each participant read out what they had written to the rest of the group. This was an interesting and enjoyable event.

Before dinner John Wells spoke about the island Montserrat. Illustrating his talk with slides he discussed the history and economic state of the island during the eighteenth century. He described the sugar plantations and the slaves who worked there. The island was under British rule during the seventeenth century when the slaves were imported from West Africa, but during the American Revolution France drove the British out. The island was returned to Britain under the treaty of Paris and in 1834 the slaves were liberated.

In 1989 a hurricane hit the island and in 1995 the vulcano erupted and caused great destruction in the South of the island. Many islanders left Montserrat because there was no more work or even homes for them to live in. Nowadays the main source of income is tourism.

After dinner Andrew Weir lead a discussion on “Nationalism, Internationalism and Non-Nationalism”. He introduced the hour with a summary of the three contributions to the debate so far: the first from David Kelso who spoke on the theme during the Study Weekend last year; the second by a mysterious “Internationalist” who wrote in “Esperanto en Skotlando”; the third by Girvan McAoidh who also wrote in “Esperanto en Skotlando”. When Andrew opened the discussion to the floor plenty of participants hit the point very well with their contributions. It was finally revealed that “Internationalist” was our own Ed Robertson.

Duncan Thomson closed Saturday's programme skilfully leading a game on word definitions. In four teams we had to think of a believable definition for a really obscure word picked by Duncan from PIV. Duncan then collected the definitions and read them out along with the correct one. Teams would gain one point if another team picked their definition and three points if they identified the correct definition. After several words Duncan added up the totals. The team which most often picked the correct definition and most often tricked the other teams by their definition would win. Unsurprisingly the team with our visiting dictionary writer won!

Sunday 7^th September

Professor John Wells began the day with another Language Seminar. Using diagrams he taught us about the organs of speech and the classification of consonants. He spoke about voicing and the place and manner of articulation, which together uniquely form the sounds of speech.

After the coffee break Ed Robertson spoke about Esperanto Etymology and gave out to the participants sheets with a list of Esperanto words in one column and a list of source languages in the adjacent column. The “students'” task was to pair up each word with the language it came from. There was variable success amongst them!

The Religious Service and the Alternative took place after lunch. David Kelso lead the Alternative in the topic “Spirituality”.

During the two Language Seminars of Professor Wells and Ed Robertson's item on etymology, Hugh Reid took lessons for beginners. He took as a model the structure of the lessons from the CD's of a well known language teacher which have had great success in the rapid acquisition of languages. The experiment seemed to be successful.

The Study Weekend finished with the meeting of the committee of the Scottish Esperanto Association.

Salisbury Esperanto Congress

Next year the British Esperanto Congress (17/20 April) is well away from the Scottish Congres which will take place in Dundee in June; so it is feasible to visit both.

The organiser of the British Congress is former SEA President, Jean Bisset; so there is a real Scottish dimension.

Salisbury is the quintessional English cathedral city; and the venue for the congress will be Sarum College, which is in the Cathedral Close.

At present the programme is under active preperation.

A unique feature of the Congress will be the celebration of the 150th anneverserary of Dr. Zamenhof's birth, as by a happy coincidence, the congress occurs during the exact date!

Highland Esperanto Congress

The Scottish Esperanto Congress in Inverness (6/8 June 2008) was a nice mixture of erudition, sightseeing and good humour.

David Hannah was responsible for the heady confection!

The erudition consisted of lectures about Scottish Gaelic, Highland Railways, the great Scottish author Neil Gunn, the Pictish language, and the Celtic Scale (that was veritable erudition!).

The sightseeing was Inverness itself, charming Dornoch ( a town walk), and Dunrobin Castle - incredible vibes there.

And the fun? All meals were shared, including a really merry banquet at the Eagle Hotel in Dornoch; and a surfeit of good humour in virtuoso after-banquet speech about a multi-culture Scotland.

On the way home, I further dipped into Highland culture by visiting Culloden: the National Trust has prepared a remarkable new experience there; but, in spite of all the caveats, I can never forget the genocide which followed the battle.

Next year we congress in Dundee; Andrew Weir will preside.

Come along, and revel in the culture of Esperanto!

Change of venue for Scottish Congress

The Scottish Esperanto Association has had a booking for its annual Congress for quite some time with the hotel in Invershin, Sutherland. There were rumours that the hotel was possibly giong to be sold; but that did not worry us too much as hotels frequently change hands, and bookings are part of any deal. However, we were taken aback when the proprietor indicated that the building would no longer be a hotel; so our booking would have to be cancelled.

At present President David Hannah is seeking another venue. When we have concrete details, full information will be published; however, the dates (6/9 June 2008) and part of the world (northern Scotland) will hopefully be unchanged.

The unexpected often happens when conferences are being planned; but change-of-use for a hotel is not too common. Ironically, we had a fall-back position, but another group thwarted us when they made a very early booking!

Edinburgh Celebration of Zamenhof

The Scottish capital was cold but with indications of the coming festivities agreeably complementing its glorious architecture.

The venue (on 1 December 2007) was St. Mark's Unitarian Church: an unusual ecclesiastical essay by the great David Bryce.

During the morning the Scottish Committee really laboured; it was one of the most important meeting of recent years: the results will emerge in the coming months!

In the afternoon others arrived, and we celebrated Dr. Zamenhof by looking analytically at Esperanto, his astonishing gift to the world.

Girvan Mckay (From Ireland) delivered the lecture: thoughtful, challenging, humorous and in impeccable Esperanto. It was followed by 45 minutes of questions and observations.

After that we all attacked the festive table, and informally honed our Esperanto.

Volapük surge

Volapük has never quite died; in fact, its literature is bigger than most people imagine. However, it has recently made an unexpected impact on Wikipedia. In a few months, the number of articles in Volapük has increased from 5000 to 110,000.

What lies behind this unexpected phenomenon? The use of a bot which has grabbed information from existing articles about towns in Europe and the United States and subjected them to machine-translation. The articles are all stumps (fragments); and I cannot really comment concerning the quality of the Volapük.

All this has caused a minor stir. The initiator of this project has indicated that his aim has been to raise awareness. He has probably succeeded; but whether Volapük will benefit is problematical.

However, even for historical reasons, all those who are interested in planned languages should learn at least a little about Volapük; Wikipedia, as always, can prove of assistance!

Dunlane Study Weekend

On Saturday and Sunday (22/23 September 2007) the annual Scottish Esperanto Study Weekend took place at Scottish Churches House, Dunblane.

For the first occasion the event was held in Leighton House, an annexe of the main building, which enabled a flexible programme and an intimate atmosphere.

Hugh Reid, the Director of the Weekend, wished to encourage creative writing; so this activity was pursued in parallel with the lecture programme. This development worked well; so it will probably become a part of future Study Weekends.

There was also a short excursion to the Scottish Antiques Centre and Doune Castle. The Antiques Centre is a veritable treasure trove, and the castle (Mary, Queen of Scots stayed there!) deserves to be better known.

Esperanto at Invershin

It is too early to have much information about the programme of the 2008 Scottish Congress: David Hannah has been seen with what appears to be a thinking-cap; so details will soon start to flow. However, we have dates (6/8 June 2008, plus an excursion day) and the Congress town is Invershin. Never heard of it?! Well, it is near Lairg, which is near Dornoch. Do you have a map? Invershin is a hotel, a railway station and a grandiose Youth Hostel; so all needs will be met. It is in Sutherland: an enormous county with less than ten thousand souls, some of whom speak Gaelic. Its surroundings are lonely and majestic; it is not London! Something different is guaranteed; and we shall paint the place green!

Lanark Congress: cold weather, but warm atmosphere!

The Congress (15/18 June 2007) coincided with the extraordinary June which the UK suffered; but at least the weather stabilised during the weekend; and the Congress atmosphere was sweetness and light!

David Kelso presided with typical geniality which made newcomers feel immediately at home. There were 35 participants from 8 countries; so our internationalism was well demonstrated. Time was at a premium for some business purposes; but David made certain that words were not wasted and sound decisions reached!

Out guest speaker was Vladka Chvatalova who works as a translator with the European Union in Brussels. Her light-hearted lecture was about the Czech contribution to European culture; it went well beyond music! Her serious theme was working with the EU. In Brussels there is a language minefield; she gave us behind-the-scenes anecdotes about the expensive and often chaotic reality.

Other lectures were of uniformly high quality. Girvan McKay spoke about his attempt to translate William Auld’s early masterpiece, La Infana Raso into English and Scots. Jack Casey gave us solid facts about the utopianism of Robert Owen. Andrew Weir revealed the depths of linguistics. Hugh Reid explained the attempts being made to translate into Esperanto the blog of the vice-president of the European Union.

There was a banquet; an Ecumenical service and an Alternative; and a guided tour of Lanark with 20 intrepid Esperantists led by David Bisset.

There was an excursion on Monday to the Clyde Valley and Biggar.

Andrew Weir, our new vice-president, who is studying at Edinburgh University is perhaps the youngest in the history of the Scottish movement.

Next year the congress will take pace in Invershin, which is in the far north of Scotland: David Hannah is planning some delights in this incredible location!

Vere ĝuinda estis la evento vigle estrata de prezidanto, David Kelso. 35 homoj partoprenis el 8 landoj. La prelegaro estis elstara; la etoso estis amikeca; la aferkunsidoj estis celtrafaj.

Oni bankedis kaj manĝetis. Kelaj Diservis; kelkaj fiservis!

Estis gvidataj rondiroj de histoririĉaj Lanark kaj New Lanark.

La lingva nivelo estis alta: mankis krokodiloj!

Andreo Weir, nia nova vicprezidanto, estas eble la plej juna en la historio de la skota movado.

British Esperanto Congress at Letchworth

My wife Jean and myself arrived at Letchworth on the Saturday morning after travelling during the night from Belgium! Not perfect planning; but that's life - or, more accurately, a frantic life!

I have a passion for architecture; so Letchworth for me was a dream destination. It was, of course, the first Garden City; and Esperanto has been there for over 100 years.

Fatigue during the Saturday made the Congress really dream-like for me: for better or worse!

The number of young Esperanto-speakers there was very high: that's really good news! The AGM was brilliantly conducted by Professor John Wells; so no frightening fireworks!

World President Renato Corsetti gave the inaugural Buchanan Lecture (EAB and Liverpool University) about the value of bilingualism: very clear, very professional with refreshments after.

There were interminable discussion groups about renewal: far too many for me: a congress is primarily a celebration.

Plenty of private conversations; lots of overseas participants; a few outstanding lectures, particularly from Anna Lowenstein (Renato's wife) about the hidden dimensions of children's literature: utterly enthralling; she should have given at least three lectures!

The Broadway Hotel where we stayed was excellent with a marvellous carvery and reasonably priced New World wines: highly recommended.

Finally, Letchworth merits many more visitors: an earthly paradise of layout, architecture and gardens. My first impressions were no dream!

The 102nd Scottish Esperanto Congress (15/18 June 2007) is divided between the ancient town of Lanark, and New Lanark which is only a couple of kilometers away.

New Lanark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has gone through an incredible restoration and now is used for various appropriate functions.

It was, of course, the place where Robert Owen carried out his Socialist experiment; so it is much more than 18th century cotton mills beside the river Clyde.

It is a place where a Utopian community functioned for the benefit of the workers and the local community. This experiment worked economically: an unusual occurrence!

Come to the Congress, and savour this extraordinary place; you will not regret your decision!

Karaj esperantistoj,

cxi tiu estas la lasta mesaĝo, per kiu mi, kiel
prezidanto de UEA, salutas vin okaze de la nova
jaro. Eble venis la momento post tiom da jaroj
starigi personan bilancon pri ĉi tiu tuta
periodo: kion mi celis fari, kial mi celis tion,
kaj kion mi atingis kaj ne atingis.

Unue mi diru sincere, ke mi opinias ke en ĉiuj
ĉi tiuj jaroj mi pli multe ricevis de UEA ol mi
donis al ĝi. Same mi opinias ke dum la tuta vivo
mi pli multe ricevis de Esperanto ol mi donis al
gxi. Tio verŝajne ne estas nur mia sento. Mi
trovis ĝin ĉe multaj esperantistoj sed ankaŭ
ĉe la plej fidelaj agantoj en aliaj idealismaj
organizaĵoj, ĉu en politikaj partioj, ĉu en
perditaj misiejoj en Afriko. Pro tio, kion mi
ricevis de Esperanto kaj de UEA, mi dankas vin,
membrojn kaj nemembrojn de UEA, kiuj legas ĉi
tiujn liniojn. Mi ne forgesos viajn donacojn, kaj
viaj plej belaj donacoj estas tio, kion vi faris por Esperanto.

Se temas pri Esperanto, mi havis la naivan ideon
antaŭ deko da jaroj proksimume, ke unu el la
problemoj de la nuna movado estas, ke ĝi ne plu
estas movado. Vi scias, ke ĉiuj revolucioj en la
daŭro de la tempo instituciiĝas, kaj ke la
idealismaj batalantoj de la unua periodo
transdonas la regadon al homoj, kiuj apartenantaj
al posta generacio, ne havas la samajn
idealismajn pensojn, emojn kaj agojn. Temas pri
homoj, kiuj volas mastrumi efike kaj remeti en
ordon la ĥaosan entuziasmon de la antaŭa
periodo. Tio estas, tre verŝajne, natura leĝo,
el kiu ankaŭ la Esperanto-movado ne povas
elfuĝi. Se Esperanto estus la lingvo plej multe
instruata en la mondo, tiam certe ne profitus el
tio idealistoj kiel ni, sed tiuj samaj homoj,
kiuj nuntempe profitas el la instruado de la
angla. Por profiti el io, oni devas esti
profitema, kaj esperantistoj ne estas tiaj.

Sed la Esperanto-movado ne venkis, kaj la
problemo ne estas tiu. La problemo de la nuna
movado, kiu iĝis malpli mova, estas objektiva
kaj ŝuldiĝas al la ekapero en la nuna epoko de
monda imperio, kiu havas sian lingvon kaj tre
efike disvastigas ĝin, trovante amason da homoj,
kiuj pretas akcepti ĝin kaj mem pludisvastigi
ĝin. Estas klare, ke fronte al tiu problemo,
kiun Zamenhof eĉ ne antaŭvidis, ni sentas nin
senhelpaj, ni sentas, ke ni vane remas
kontraŭflue. Kaj, kiel diras indonezia diro, eĉ
krokodiloj - ĉi tie temas pri la veraj bestoj -
ridas se vi provas remi kontraŭflue. Je tiu
fenomeno en la pasintaj jardekoj estis plurspecaj
reagoj. Kelkaj diris: ne estas nia tasko batali
kontraŭ la angla. Eble kelkaj el vi konas la
rakontojn pri Asteriks, loĝanto en malgranda
vilaĝo de Gaŭlujo, la sola vilaĝo, kiu
aŭdacas kontraŭstari la invidintan roman
armeegon. Sendube la loĝantoj de aliaj vilaĝoj
diris, ke ne estas ilia tasko, batali kontraŭ la
latina -- kaj vidu la sekvojn. En tiu kazo restas
al ni nur la vojo krei nian propran niĉon, nian
propran neston en forlasita parto de la arbaro, kaj zorgi pri niaj aferoj.

Tion mi neniel povas akcepti. Komprenigi tion al
ĉiuj espernatistoj estis unu el la linioj de mia
agado. Mi, ni, estas kiel la vilagxo de Asteriks.
Ni estas malgranda grupo de idealistoj, kiuj
provas enkonduki revolucian novaĵon, sed la
mondo ĉirkaŭ ni ne volas aŭddi ĝin, ĉar ĝi
renversas ekzistantajn ideojn kaj interesojn. La
samo okazis pri sklaveco, la samo estas okazanta
nun pri tre pli gravaj temoj. Oni eĉ ŝerce
demandas, ĉu la terglobo malaperos en la jaro
2050-a aux 2060-a, simple ĉar aro da homoj, kiuj
taksas sian komforton pli grava ol ili taksas la
pluekziston de la mondo, fajfas pri malpurigo de
la medio, internaciaj konvencioj, ktp. Do, ne
estas nur Esperanto, kiu estas malatentata de la regantaj fortoj en la imperio.

Ni devas agnoski la situacion de la mondo en nia
lingva kampo, sed ni ne devas akcepti ĝin, se ni
volas ankoraŭ havi la rajton, respekti nin mem
kaj karesi niajn infanojn. Tion mi provis diri al
la esperantistoj en ĉi tiu periodo, kaj mi
trovis multajn aŭskultantojn favorajn je tio. Mi
provis ĝisnaŭze revenigi al la idealismo de
Zamenhof, kiu estis multe pli granda viziulo kaj
multe pli danĝera revoluciulo ol ni nun.

Ni certe ne triumfigos Esperanton zorgante pri
niaj elegioj en nia forlasita parto de la arbaro.
Nur per klara montro de niaj celoj ni eventuale
instigos la mondon atenti pri ni: ni volas atingi
justecon en la lingva kaj kultura kampo. Eble oni
rekte batalos kontraŭ ni, sed tio estos agnosko,
ke ni ekzistas kaj ke niaj ideoj estas atentindaj.

Bonŝance la historio ne finiĝis. La nuna
situacio ne dauxros eterne, kaj post la fino de
unu batalo inter imperioj sekvas nun aliaj
bataloj kaj aliaj antaŭvidoj por la estonteco.
Mi kredas, ke la esperantistoj devus ree
adaptiĝi al la monda situacio, kiel ili kapablis
fari dum la pasinteco. Esperanto estis tre bona
ponto inter homoj el malsamaj kaj inter si
batalantaj landoj dum la unua mondmilito.
Esperanto estis tre bona ponto inter homoj
loĝantaj en malsamaj flankoj de la tiel nomata
"fera kurteno" en multaj jardekoj de la pasinta
jarcento. Esperanto estu ankaŭ nun bona ponto
inter malsamaj kaj interbatalantaj civilizoj. Por
fari tion oni devas multe pli preti aŭskulti
esperantistojn el aliaj civilizoj, kaj ankaŭ
aktive labori por krei ilin, kie ili ne ekzistas.

Krei esperantistojn en ĉiuj mondopartoj kaj ne
nur en la tradiciaj landoj estis la dua linio de
mia laboro. Certe nun UEA ne estas nur malplena
mallongigo en multaj triamondaj landoj.

Mi trovis multajn favorajn aŭskultantojn pri la
supre menciitaj ideoj, sed mi ankaŭ trovis
multajn indiferentajn aŭskultantojn kaj ankaŭ
kelkajn kontraŭajn. Al ĉi tiuj mi diras, ke mi
neniam pensis, ke nur mi posedas la veron. Ni
vidu en la praktiko, kies ideoj portas pli da
rezultoj, tio estas pli multaj neesperantistoj,
kiuj konvinkiĝas lerni kaj uzi Esperanton, ĉar
la cetero, laŭ konata libro-titolo, estas nur literaturo.

Mi devas ankoraŭ diri du aferojn. La unua temas
pri la graveco de la Centra Oficejo de UEA kaj
pri la supozataj (vere nur supozataj) luktoj
ĉirkaŭ ĝi aux inter ĝi kaj la organoj de UEA.
La Centra Oficejo estas la plej grava loko en la
tuta komunumo. Sen ĝi ne ekzistus firma punkto
al kiu rigardi. Ĝi estas nia Mekko kaj nia
Vatikano, nia Jerusalemo kaj tiel plu. Dirinte
tion, mi tamen diru, ke ĝi havas sian rolon kaj
plenumas tion bonege, sed oni ne rajtas atendi de
ĝi tion, kion ĝi ne povas fari. Se via intereso
estas disvastigi Esperanton en Indonezio, en
Gvatemalo aŭ en Francujo, inter la
lingvo-instruistoj de Aŭstralio aŭ de
Germanujo, la Centra Oficejo ne povas fari tion.
Se vi volas ke Eŭropa Unio uzu Esperanton, ne
pensu, ke tio okazos per translokigo de la Centra
Oficejo al Bruselo. Respondecas pri la progreso
de Esperanto en la mondo, pri la atingoj de la
celoj de la statuto de UEA, ni mem, la aktivuloj,
neniu alia. Ne havu iluzion, ke per oficistoj, vi
povas anstataŭigi volontulajn agantojn. Tio
estas la maljuneca malsano de nia movado, por
parafrazi iun, kiun oni lastatempe tro malmulte
citas. Tiukampe mi ne faris multon, sed certe
UEA, inkluzive de la Centra Oficejo, eniris la
retan mondon dum la lasta jardeko. Samtempe mi
klopodis helpi la agantojn tra la landoj kaj tra
la lokaj kluboj, ĉar ili estas la veraj
produktantoj de esperantistoj, kaj ni ekzistas nur danke al ili.

La dua afero estas, ke mi havas tre bonajn
memorojn pri la maniero, kiel multaj novaj
esperantistoj en la ekonomie evoluinta mondo kaj
multaj normalaj esperantistoj en Afriko, Azio kaj
Suda Ameriko reagis je miaj tro multaj petoj pri
kunlaborado aŭ tutsimple pri laborado.

La retaj lernintoj estas, ekzemple, tiuj junuloj,
kiuj ekpensas, ke estus bele se ekzistus
franca-esperanta vortaro, kaj ekverkas ĝin, ne
konsciante pri la ekzisto de la tuta franclingva
esperantistaro kaj pri ĝia historio (retaj
kursoj ofte estas iom tro kaŝemaj pri la ekzistanta nereta movado).

Por doni ekzemplon pri la neeŭropanoj, mi parolu
pri juna afrikano ĵus-lerninto de Esperanto, kiu
havis teruran trafik-akcidenton, pro kiu li devis
resti en malsanulejo, kaj lia biciklo komplete
detruiĝis. Dum la restado en la malsanulejo lia
ĉefa angoro estis, ke nun pro manko de biciklo
li ne povos iri instrui Esperanton al lokoj
malproksimaj du dekojn da kilometroj, kaj pri tio
li parolis kun la homoj, kiuj demandis pri lia
sano. Elirinte el la malsanulejo, kaj ricevinte
la biciklon de eŭropaj esperantistoj, li
refariĝis la plej feliĉa homo en la mondo, kaj
ekpedalis al siaj foraj klubetoj. Da tiaj okazoj
ekzistas multaj en la plej malriĉaj landoj de la
mondo. Mi bedaŭras, ke mi ne povas citi pliajn,
sed ĉiuj miaj sudamerikaj, afrikaj kaj aziaj geamikoj, certe rekonos sin.

Dum ekzistos tiaj homoj, vi rajtas dormi
trankvile pri la pluekzisto de Esperanto, kaj mi
rajtas trankvile fini mian periodon kun granda danko al vi ĉiuj!

Jen instigo de UEA:

La Esperanto-redakcio de Pola Radio kaj la Estraro de UEA varme
dankas ĉiujn, kiuj jam skribis al la Pola Radio aŭ polaj
reprezentejoj por apogi la daŭrigon de la Esperanto-elsendoj. La
nombro de leteroj kaj retmesaĝoj multe kreskis lastatempe, sed ĉar
la sorto de la elsendoj ankoraŭ ne estas decidita, necesas energie
daŭrigi la kampanjon. La fina decido dependos de la pola ministerio
pri eksterlandaj aferoj. Pro tio necesas koncentri la kampanjon al
la polaj diplomatiaj reprezentejoj tra la mondo, kiuj siavice

Scottish Esperanto Study Weekend

This annual 2-day event finished today; the only disappointment was the lack of beginners.

The advanced programme was of the highest quality. All items were in Esperanto; and the level and variety of the contributions clearly indicates that Esperanto is a high-level language, and not a crude medium for routine communication.

Lectures themes included: William Soutar, the Scottish poet; the war experiences of Alan Whickers; the World Esperanto Congress in Florence; and a visit to India.

There was also an interesting focus group session re Esperanto,

Esperanto games and music provided challenge and pleasant relaxation.

Conversation during meals and breaks was vigorous.

The excursion was to Scone palace, one of the great houses of Scotland. It is pronounced "skoon"!

Scottish Churches House, Dunblane, was as always a comfortable and welcoming conference centre. Dunblane itself was most attractive in the autumn sunshine.

Everyone learned something; language skills were honed; vocabulary increased; and the evolution of Esperanto was given further impetus, as contemporary themes were tackled.

Prof. John Wells, iama prezidanto de UEA, estos la ĉefa gasto en la
Malferma Tago de la Centra Oficejo de UEA, kies 25-a eldono okazos
sabaton, la 25-an de novembro. La ĵusa profesia emeritiĝo de prof.
Wells inspiris lin elekti kiel temon de sia prelego "Rigardi
malantaŭen, rigardi antaŭen". La Malferma Tago ricevos gaston
ankaŭ el Japanio, la lando de la venontjara UK: Usui Hiroyuki
alportos salutojn de la Jokohama LKK kaj parolos pri la kongresa temo
"Okcidento en Oriento: akcepto kaj rezisto". Krom prelegoj, en la
programo estos ankaŭ i.a. prezentado de novaj Esperanto-filmoj kaj
diskuto kun prezidanto Renato Corsetti kaj kelkaj aliaj estraranoj de
UEA, kiuj kunsidos en Roterdamo en la sama semajnfino.

Kiel tradicie, la vizitantoj povos profiti de rabatoj en la
libroservo kaj gajni esperantaĵojn en senpaga loterio. Kafo kaj teo,
ankaŭ senpagaj, estos varmaj la tutan tagon. La Malferma Tago
daŭros de la 10-a ĝis la 17-a horo.

William Auld: funebra ceremonio

La ceremonio okazis hodaŭ en la Paroĵa Preĝejo, Dollar, Skotlando. Ĉirkaŭ 150 homoj ĉeestis. Roy, la filo de Bill, faris emociigan paroladon pri sia patro. D-ro John Wells, prezidanto de EAB, resumis la montopintoj de lia literatura kariero. D-ro Renato Corsetti, prezidanto de UEA, parolis pri geniulo kiu fieris pri sia ordinareco, pri homo kiu kredis pri la graveco de ĉiuj homoj. Tradukis Brian Moon, vicprezidanto de la Akademio, kaj ankaŭ substrekis la rolon de Bill rilate al tiu instanco.

Sakflutisto ludis skotan lamenton dum oni portis la ĉerkon ekster la kirkon; kaj William Auld, post laŭtlegado de Psalmo en la skota, estis enterigita kelkajn metrojn for de la kirko.

Nun la majstro kuŝas pace meze de sia komunumo ŝirmata de skotlanda montetĉeno.

Tamen, lia voĉo neniam silentos!

Funeral of Bill Auld

Today Jean and I went to the little town of Dollar to attend Bill's funeral.

There was a slight touch of autumn, but the sun appeared and Dollar looked its best, nestling under the Ochil Hills.

Perhaps 150 persons attended the Funeral Service. Everything was done decently and in order, but with an underlying feeling of celebration in spite of the sadness.

Roy spoke about Bill as a Father. He clearly depicted the talented man whom we all know; yet a man who remained close to his small town and a multitude of ordinary people.

John Wells with commendable brevity indicated the importance of Bill as a literary giant. Renato Corsetti chose simple moving words to describe Bill as a man who was proud to be an Esperantist. The translation was done by Brian Moon, who afterwards added a few words concerning Bill's role in the Academy of Esperanto.

The coffin left the church to a plaintive Jacobite melody on the bagpipes.

Bill was buried in the kirkyard a few metres from the Kirk door. Scots was used for the reading of a Psalm.

We went to a hotel across the road for a dram and a plate of broth. Conversations continually returned to the humble genius.

Bill is at rest in the shadow of the Ochils; but his works and personality remain to inspire us all.

Alvokas la Esperanto-komunumon aktive engaĝiĝi en la agadoj kiuj, sur diversaj niveloj, strebas antaŭenigi praktikojn koherajn kun la principoj de la bezonata ŝanĝoprocezo, kaj utiligi siajn lingvon kaj retojn serve al tiuj klopodoj.

Language discrimination

Esperantists have a particular interest concerning language discrimination; it is not the only discrimination; it may not be the most serious; but it is wrong in principle and has many negative consequences.

In recent days I have noticed some flagrant examples. For example there was an interview with the Italian Foreign Minister concerning the possibility of Italy sending peace-keepers to Lebanon. The Minister understood the questions; but his command of English was insufficient to nuance any of his comments. His frustration was perceptible.

There is a tendency in the UK to interview only those who claim to be able to speak English: interpretation is not provided.

At one time correspondents were expected to learn the language of the country to which they were sent; there is little evidence of this now.

In the Middle East Israelis in general speak better English than Palestinians; this has obvious implications in relation to the ability to communicate a point-of-view.

Recently there has been another extraordinary example of langauge discrimination. Two passengers were asked to leave a British charter flight because they were not speaking English. So scrupulously avoid speaking Welsh, Irish, Scottish Gaelic or even Esperanto. It was suspected that Arabic was being spoken; but these morons, of course, only recognise "non-English"!

We should be aware of language problems and prejudices, and the distortions which ensue; and be ready to protest.

The widespread use of Esperanto may appear utopian; but Esperanto is even more needed. And that need will not go away.

Ĉi-jare David Kelso fariĝis prezidanto de Esperanto-Asocio de Skotlando; kaj respondecos venontan jaron pri la 102a skotlanda kongreso de Esperanto en la antikva urbo, Lanark.

Malgraŭ tio li ankaŭ estis elektita antaŭnelonge kiel la sekretario de la Esperanto-Asocio de Britio.

Springboard to Languages

The Esperanto Association of Britain has recently embarked on a campaign to advocate the teaching of Esperanto in English primary schools.

The emphasis is on Esperanto as an apprentice language by means of which the learning of other languages will be facilitated.

The Springboard campaign was launched at the London Language Show in October 2005.

The rationale for the campaign is the intention of the (British) Government to make language teaching compulsory in English primary schools.

The Esperanto Association has launched a clearly structured web site with clear and useful information.

This is an ambitious enterprise; we shall watch its progress with considerable interest.
